Famous Cat Show

I was invited to participate in the Famous Cat Show at Fan*Alley.  I love black cats so I chose to depict the infamous Princess Monster Truck as her most fabulous self.  I even used gold ink to give my watercolors some extra pizzazz!

I created artwork in the gallery as part of the opening night festivities.  Here's the setup of my station.  I drew sketches and made personalized blob paintings of kitties!  I had so much fun, its was awesome meeting all the folks who came out to see the show.

Here's a sampling of the blob paintings I made...

Sketch Monster Solo Show

My solo show, Sketch Monster, will be up at Fan*Alley during the month of September.  I have prints, sketchbooks, postcards, and original art up for viewing and purchase (wink wink).  I will also be doing three signings on September 5th, 19th, and the 26th.  Follow both my Instagram account and Fan*Alley's for times, dates, and giveaways!

P.S. Here is a closeup of the unlettered promo artwork I drew for a Facebook banner and Instagram posts.

Lafcadio Character Designs

I'm working on an illustration for the Roald Dahl/Shel Silverstein tribute show opening Saturday, August 15th at Fan*Alley in Anaheim.  I chose Lafcadio by Shel Silverstein as my inspiration.  The above doodles are the shape studies I'm doing to find a character design that appeals to me and also resonates with the source material.

Sketch Show

I have two original pieces in the Sketch Show opening Saturday, February 7th at Catalyst Gallery in Westminster, California.  Map, info, and dates is on the flyer above.

Both of these pieces will be for sale.  The bears on the left were drawn with pencil on paper.  The dinosaurs on the right were done with Micron and ink wash.

Wondercon Art

I spent this last weekend at Wondercon in Artist Alley with the ever-dapper Kevin Woody.  I had a good time meeting fellow creatives and talking to the nice folks that stopped by.

I drew these three pieces at the con using an 02 and 05 Micron on textured drawing paper.  I've been on an aquatic kick as of late for some odd reason.  My sketchbook is filled with all sorts of mermaids and octopi and fish monsters. Perhaps my subconscious is telling me I need a vacation. :)

MFA Biennial: Sophmore Year

I'm currently in a juried show at the City of Brea Art Gallery in Brea, California.  Check out the show announcement for opening and closing dates.

These are the three pieces of mine that are on display.*  I just received confirmation that the one of the left was purchased! Yay gallery sale!

* I took this pic in my studio.  The gallery itself looks amazing compared to this clutter.

My MFA Show

This is a belated post!  The transition from 2013 to 2014 was a busy one for me.  Thankfully I've completed several projects that have been haunting me these past few months and now I have the time to get back to sketch blogging-yay!

The pictures below were taken at my MFA show this past December at Cal State Fullerton.  I finally completed the degree and am now a MASTER of Fine Arts in Illustration!  Huzzah!!!

"Have Fun" was the title of my show.  Those two words perfectly describe my artistic philosophy.  I want to have fun working on art and I want my audience to have fun looking at it.

This was the view from just left of the entrance....

 ...and from the right.

The display case at the front held my handmade books and mixed media sculptures.

These are two pages from a comic I worked on for a YA horror anthology.

 Matted color prints.

My life drawing sketchbooks displayed on a pedestal.

A block of prints from my sketchbook.  There were 200+ pages on display.

A close-up of one block of pages.

Another close-up...
I used nails and small alligator clips to hang the pages.  Doing so helped to cut down time for installation, saved me money by forgoing framing costs, and made it easy for me to remove art when it sold.  I ended up selling 90% of the show so tear-down was an absolute snap.

Thanks to everyone who came out to see my show!

Sushi Bear

I'm participating this month in a group show with the OC Illustrators called "A Bunch of Malarkey." The show is at the La Habra Art Gallery in La Habra, California.  Stop by and see the all of the art if you're in the area, I'm honored to be able to share walls with this wonderful group!

"Sushi Bear" is a framed print.  It was inked with a brush, colored in Photoshop, and printed out on watercolor paper.
