I used Tombo markers, Pentel sign pens, Pentel felt tips, Faber-Castell Pitt pens-B tip, and Microns to draw the above. I would recommend any of those except the sign pens. Those bled through the pages in my sketchbook. Of the rest, my favorite are the Tombos. You can get a ton of character in your linework with the double felt tips.

These are the color tests I've done for project FK. I'm really happy with the way they've come out. I think the "vibe" of this technique goes well with the story I want to tell. I may adjust the palette a little bit, but other than that I'm going to start working on pages. :)

More thumbnails.... This time its the first 7 pages of a project I'm calling FK. I have most of the prep work done for this comic, the last big thing I have to do is research for the backgrounds and environments. Part of that will be done at Anaheim Ice-I have plans to hang out there in the upcoming weeks taking reference photos and sketching. Anything that gets me away from the drawing table and watching hockey is a welcome distraction. :)

Sidenote: Tonight the studio I share with Laura Hoffman will be open to the public from 5-8pm concurrent with the opening of Acquired Taste at the CSUF Begovich Gallery. Look for signs directing you back to the studios, we are in the one next to the orange tree and the three headless statues.

I've been MIA the last month working on character designs, plot, and pages for a new comic. I'm excited about the story enough that I'm keeping it under wraps, but I thought I'd share the first 15 pages of the book anyway. I think things are ambiguous enough that my thumbnails aren't giving away any spoilers.

I wanted to share this image too. I was concerned my layouts were appearing repetitive so I quickly filled in the panels with the marquee and paint bucket tools in Photoshop. Needless to say looking at the panels this way confirmed my layouts are okay. :)

Model reference is from Pixelovely, drawn with Tombo markers. This is an observational exercise I do quite often. I first sketch the silhouette of the model with one color and then use a second to draw in the shadows. If I drew the silhouette right then I should have no problem adding the details.

These thumbnails will make zero sense to anyone without knowledge of my comic and the characters, but I wanted to show them off anyway. I don't write a script in advance, I just draw thumbnails and write dialogue at the same time. Occasionally little secrets the characters have come to light as I sketch and I absolutely love that serendipity. Believe or not but these 10 pages solved a slight issue I had with the plot. It totally made my day to have that last piece of the puzzle come into place. :D

Things are progressing with the comic slowly but surely. I'm currently inking pages and building a website for things so hopefully soon I'll get to show off the hard work I've put into this story. :)

Illustration Friday: Launch

When I saw that "launch" was word of the week first thing I thought of was humanity's first attempts at flight and how most of them ended in spectacular crashes. I've drawn my own version of a historical attempt using a Canadian goose and pigeons. In theory the birds would flap their wings and off you'd fly amongst the clouds. How does this launch into the air end? Let's say the birds lived to tell the tale.

One more note: I drew the pigeons with their wings closed because they are really stupid birds I don't imagine they would flap their wings until moments before impact.

I spent the weekend doing speed painting exercises trying to sharpen both my painting and Painter skills. This was my fav of the bunch I did. I got a couple more posted over here.

This profile started as a speed painting but I took it to finish. I like the way it came out, it makes me nostalgic for the summer I spent at Knott's working as a portrait artist in Ghost Town/Fiesta Village. :)

Speed Paint

This is a detail of a speed paint I did in Painter based off a photo of a woman in a steampunk costume. I spent 45 minutes on the original image and then cropped it to this size and spent another 20 tightening up some details. The main brushes I used where the Opaque Acrylic and Simple Water.

Shuttle Designs

I ran across the neatest book ever in the library. The title and details are in the sketch. I love this book to bits, it is as thick as a textbook and has reams and reams of info on the space shuttle and the design process that dates back to the 60's.

Above are some of the ideas the scientists had for the shuttle and boosters. They're weird configurations but I bet most folks thought the same thing when they first saw Colombia launch in 1981.

Rainy Day Crafts!

I stayed indoors yesterday and got all crafty with paperclay. This is the first time I've used and I really like it.

Paperclay is pretty forgiving even after its dried. I was able to use a wet paintbrush to smooth out the odd dents and dings. I also used foam and toothpicks as armature and the clay had no problems adhering to that. As soon as my little harpy totally dries I'm going to paint her in purples, grays, and greens like a rock pigeon.

3/6 EDIT: The harpy is done! I'll post pics with a link soon. :)

Belgium & the Netherlands

I'm working on a series of spot illustrations about cities and culture. I wanted to learn something new so I went through a couple of books about Belgium and the Netherlands. The above are the sketches I made based off the pics in the book, I'm sort of going for a travelogue theme with a central character.

At the end of the day I decided to base my illustrations off of Koninginnedag, the Dutch holiday that celebrates the Queen's birthday. It looks like a really fun day with everyone dressing up like the Queen, wearing orange, lots of dancing, and shopping at the Vrijmarkt. I'll post the sketches of Koninginnedag as soon as I finish up the character designs. It's a work-in-progress.

The end of last year I was on a bear-drawing kick, but since the 1st of January its been nothing but bunnies. Mainly because I'm designing characters for a project, also because the markings of Dutch rabbits work so well in black-and-white. Regardless bunnies are super-cute and fun to draw and that's all that matters to me. :D

This was the first thing I drew in 2011. I heard once that whatever you do as the clock hits midnight affects what you do the rest of the year. I guess that means I'm going to draw comics about gross bodily functions. Hahahaha. I don't know if that's true or not but I did laugh as I sketched this out. Maybe drawing things that make me LOL is the true omen for 2011. Yeah I hope that's it. :)

P.S. For those new to my sketch blog, the above features my crew of totally inept space pirates. Its a work-in-progress I'm hoping to turn into a webcomic very, very soon.

I couldn't decide which image to post so I'm putting up both! :)

The black and white image below was done in acrylic ink with a dip pen, microns, and a brush.

The image below was colored in Photoshop with a bit of a worn paper texture added to the background.

Comic Book Thumbnails

I thought I'd share something I have been working on. I've been drawing thumbnails of comic books and manga pages to study the pacing of the stories, the layout of the panels, and the placement of B&W and color. Its been extremely helpful to look at a story as a whole and see the structure of it. Below are the thumbnails I drew from Sardine in Outer Space V.1 by Emmanuel Guibert and Johann Sfar, and Naruto V.28 by Masashi Kishimoto.

Sardine is very consistent when it comes to panel size, shots, placement of word bubbles, and color. The sketchy nature of the original artwork makes my thumbnails not as legible as Naruto's below, but you can still see the overall consistency of Sfar's work. (Note: My thumbnails are in B&W, the comic is in color. Also the size of the image is just a bit bigger than the actual sketchbook page. The pages read left-to-right, page turns are marked with a small star.)

I know that Naruto isn't really taken seriously online by some comic-reading folks. Its mainly written off as a silly manga about ninjas, but Kishimoto is SO good when it comes to character design (I should type up a post about just that topic at another time) and layouts.

In my thumbnails below the pages read right-to-left and page turns are noted at the bottom left with a star. Note how Kishimoto extends the panels away from the gutter, keeping it clear except for spreads. The shots vary widely from extreme close-ups to wide shots. Tone is used to separate a character from the background or to emphasize a past memory, I've only seen it used sparingly for rendering a shape. Scene changes are marked with a small panel of background imagery. Word bubbles are almost in every panel but the dialogue is kept short, plenty of space is left for the image. (That's something I need to work on, my panels can sometimes get crowded with dialogue) There is a great balance of black and white especially in the fight scenes of 246 (the top one).

Its been a learning experience working on these. I've done quite a few, these three are just a sampling. :) Right now I'm especially studying manga because they are printed in black and white, the same way I eventually plan publish my comic.

When my schedule clears back up I have plans to sketch out Yotsuba, Lone Wolf and Cub, and Blade of the Immortal. I also want to start looking at some American titles: Bone (how could I not?), later issues of Finder, Blankets, and B&W issues of classic Uncanny X-Men. If you want to draw comics I really recommend doing this. I have learned so much from the couple of titles I've already sketched from.

I have a stack of photo-paper that was just crying to be used today. Its tricky to draw on because the surface is unforgiving, so I don't pencil on it, I go straight to ink. Regardless it has a wonderful slick surface that the nib glides right over. Its awesome for this type of little work.

(P.S. I don't know the exact name of the paper, but its from Epson. I get packs of 50 with the toner I buy for the printer.)

Interesting sidenote: I drew these while watching Star Trek (the reboot!). I love old Spock's winter coat. The hood/mouth cover design is so clever!

Tower

By request!..."Tower" from my old sketchbook.

This was something I drew just to get an idea bugging me out of my head. The initial notion came about when I doodled a sorcerer standing next to a broken tower. On a whim I looked up the Tower Tarot card and liked the description, so I checked out a dictionary of the occult from the library and leafed through it to get names for the rooms.

This has been sitting in my sketchbook since last year. I think there is something here but I'm waiting for the idea of it to bump against another random inkling in my cranium and then I'll know what this tower is and why it needs to be explored.

Things That Keep Me Up at Night

Yeah, I really do sit up at night sometimes with these random thoughts. :) Recently I had a little lightbulb glow over my head when I found a way to link the current mysteries of Jupiter with the movie "2010." There is a second page to this that I need to finish and then the whole idea behind this will shine through the foggy clouds of "Huh?"

But honestly, no matter how eloquent I explain my thoughts, no one will get this if they haven't seen the movie. Do see it if you haven't! Its one of my favorites!

I was totally laughing as I drew this. I didn't draw the end but I planned at having the Al/Jeff hybrid eat mushroom pizza and then Jeff would get gas and be blown off of Al's face. (Look at page one-Jeff comments about the mushrooms there) Anyway I like the idea for this, I'll probably come back to it at some point and flesh it out a bit more.

I was going to draw a comic about the World Cup but totally drew the title off-center. Rather than waste a page in the sketchbook I unleashed some snark and got this as a result. (P.S. This was drawn at the outside coffee bar at IVC before class started)

BONUS: I found a really good book at the library called "Silhouettes" ISBN: 0-486-23781-8. Its amazing the textures you can capture with just black and white. No tones, no shading. Anyway I copied some trees to be used as future BG reference.

The idea for this was sparked by the time I spent at the Phoenix airport last year on a layover. There were tons of "southwest" trinkets everywhere, including all sorts of pots in all sorts of sizes. Fun stuff to look at to kill time, but I don't think I'd ever do any serious souvenir shopping there.

So I started this comic and realized at panel two I messed up by setting the ship on fire in outer space. Fire doesn't burn without oxygen and there's not enough oxygen in the vacuum of space for combustion. With that in mind, why would the characters wear spacesuits? It just DOESN'T work. My bad...

Anyway, instead of scrapping it there I kept going giving the characters permission to berate me for my fubar. They got nasty with me so I got nasty in return...and as soon as I think of a good way to torture them I'll add on a few panels at the end and wrap this wreck up. :P

From my sketchbook. I envision this particular comic as a collection of short silly stories. But to get things going I need an intro chapter that sets up the personalities of the characters and their situation, and that been a mighty struggle for me. Regardless here's an another attempt at Chapter 1. I'm not happy with the page but I like the idea I have for the story. Well, back to the drawing board...

Drawn in my sketchbook @ Panera Bread. I had a very nice bowl of French Onion Soup and coffee there today.This panel is from a page I drew out about my Japanese class. I was sort of "meh" with the page overall, but I like this panel of me thinking a sentence through. I'm saying: "The car is under the tree."

I don't plot out these stories in advance so sometimes the craziest, zaniest stuff will appear out of nowhere. The "BLAM" panel made me giggle...I had no idea that would happen until I drew it. How does a human body so violently break apart a counter like that? What coffee was I drinking that day to draw that? Hahahaha. I totally amuse myself, the trick is drawing this stuff so everyone else gets the humor in it right?

...I Had A Pet Rat.

From my sketchbook. Yep, just like the title implies I had a pet rat as a kid named Morris. Rats may sound icky, but they are awesome pets. They are clean, super-smart, and great companions.

I found a really good book at the library: "Costume-An Illustrated Survey from Ancient Times to the 20th Century" by Margot Lister, ISBN: 0-8238-0096-2. I highly recommend this book for reference material. It was helpful in inspiring the doodles I doodled tonight.
